Do kidney stones float?

I recently passed a small kidney stone, and I was trying to examine it in the toilet. I noticed something unusual about it. Do kidney stones float in water, or do they always sink? Just curious about their physical properties.

No, kidney stones are made of heavy minerals so they do not float. If you pass one, it will definitely sink to the bottom.

Hello there. Actually, kidney stones are very dense and heavy because they are made of calcium or uric acid crystals, so they sink. If you are trying to catch a stone to show your doctor, use a clean strainer when passing urine. It is the most practical way.

I used to drink lots of horse gram soup to dissolve my stones, and when they finally passed, they always sank to the bottom because they are like tiny pebbles. If you see something floating, it is probably just tissue or bubbles. Keep drinking fluids to flush them out!

They don't float because they are solid mineral deposits. Since I manage thyroid issues, I have to be very regular with my body checkups and follow-ups. I suggest you consult your doctor and get a proper kidney scan done rather than trying to identify stones in the toilet.

My grandmother used to say that any real stone will sink immediately because it is heavy like a rock, which is true. While family advice is good, I always consult my doctor for kidney issues. They will tell you to do an ultrasound to see if the stone has actually passed.

Hey! Kidney stones are made of dense calcium oxalate or uric acid, so physics says they will sink, not float. I track my daily water intake on my app to prevent them. If you suspect you have one, tracking your symptoms and visiting a doctor is your best bet.

No, they never float. I have passed three stones over the years and they always sink. If you want to be sure you've passed it, pee through a tea strainer; that way you can collect the stone and take it to the lab for analysis.
