Do kidney stones always hurt?

I've been diagnosed with a small kidney stone, but sometimes I don't feel any pain, and other times it's unbearable. This makes me wonder. Do kidney stones always hurt, or is it common for the pain to come and go?

I totally get it, the fear of that legendary kidney stone pain can make you so anxious. But actually, they don't always hurt; many people carry small stones for years without even realizing it because they aren't causing any blockage.

Honestly, they only hurt when they decide to travel through your system at 3 AM. If they are just resting quietly in your kidney, they don't hurt at all, which is the only time my mind gets some peace.

No, they don't always hurt, especially if they are small and stable. Staying active with regular jogging or walking can actually help pass tiny, painless stones naturally, but do check with your doctor first.

They don't always cause pain, but you shouldn't ignore them just because they are silent. Get a quick ultrasound done to see the size, so you can plan treatment around your busy work schedule before it becomes an emergency.

I panicked like crazy when my ultrasound showed a 3mm stone, expecting terrible pain any second. But my doctor reassured me that small, silent stones are very common and often pass out without you even feeling much. It's really not always a painful nightmare.
