Do kidney stones always cause pain?

My neighbour just passed a kidney stone, but he said he didn't have much pain until it was almost out. I always thought kidney stones were excruciating from the start. Do kidney stones always cause pain, or can some be silent until later stages?

Not really! My roommate had a 4mm kidney stone and he had literally zero pain. He only found out about it because he got an ultrasound done for some random stomach bug.

They actually don't always hurt, yaar. My dad has had a small stone for years and he never felt any pain from it. But if it starts moving, then the pain is no joke, so it's better to keep an eye on it.

Actually, no. Kidney stones only cause pain when they start moving or block the urine flow in the ureter. If they are just sitting quietly inside the kidney, you might not feel them at all.

Not always. Some stones can remain painless for a long time. But since sudden, severe pain can shoot up your blood pressure, it's wise to monitor them through regular medical checkups with your doctor.

No, silent stones are quite common and don't cause any discomfort. However, even if there is no pain, it is important to have regular checkups and ultrasounds to ensure they aren't silently growing or causing blockages.

No bro, my brother had a stone and didn't feel a thing until it moved down the tube. Once it started moving, he was crying in pain. So don't assume no pain means you are completely safe.
