Do japanese sleep on the floor?

My colleague was talking about his trip to Japan and how people there often sleep on the floor. Is this a widespread practice, and if so, why do Japanese people sleep on the floor? I'm curious about the cultural and health reasons.

Yes, they sleep on traditional futon beds on the floor. My mother always advised me to sleep on a firm surface for backaches, but my doctor says to choose whatever mattress keeps my spine comfortable.

Yes, they use rollable futon mattresses. If you are trying it to improve your posture, try it for a weekend first. Don't make a sudden transition if you have to sit long hours at an office desk.

They do use tatami mats and futons as a standard practice. However, if you are recovering from any orthopedic surgery or joint pain, ask your doctor clearly before sleeping on the floor.

Yes, they do. I slept on a hard floor mat for two months during my back rehab. My tip is to use a thin pillow for your neck so your head doesn't tilt too forward.

I read that sleeping on the floor is great, but does anyone else feel extremely stiff in the morning when trying this? Maybe my body is just not used to it.

Yes, sleeping close to the earth is a very grounding practice in Japan. It allows the muscles to relax completely once your body adapts. Just make sure the surface is clean and draft-free.
