Do hummingbirds sleep at night?

My son and I were watching a nature show, and he asked me, 'Papa, do hummingbirds sleep at night?' I wasn't sure how to explain it. Do they actually sleep, or do they just rest somewhere?

I am just starting to learn about birds and found this so interesting. Do they sleep on branches or do they build nests like other birds to sleep at night? I hope someone can tell me.

Yes, they sleep at night. Their energy expenditure is incredibly high during the day, almost like a human running a continuous marathon. At night, they go into torpor to lower their heart rate from 1200 bpm to just 50 bpm.

Yeah they do sleep at night because they can't see in the dark anyway. They just lock their feet onto a branch and pass out in a deep sleep state to save energy.

Just like humans need deep sleep to recover, these little birds sleep deeply at night. Their body mechanism slows down completely to conserve glucose, which is a very practical way to survive cold nights.

They definitely sleep at night. If you have a garden, planting thick bushes or hanging small bird boxes can give them a safe, warm place to rest away from cold winds.

Yes, they rest completely at night. It is just like how our muscles and body need deep rest after a heavy workout day to recover properly.
