Do great whites sleep?

Watching a documentary about sharks, it made me wonder about their sleeping habits. Do big sharks like great whites actually sleep, and if so, how do they do it in the ocean?

I read about this when I was having late-night anxiety about my own sleep issues! Apparently, they can't stop swimming or they'll drown because they need water flowing over their gills. It is terrifying to think of never truly stopping, but they do have active and restful phases.

This is a fascinating nature fact, but remember that for us humans, proper sleep is highly essential to control blood pressure and stress levels. Unlike sharks who can sleep while moving, we need 7-8 hours of deep, quiet rest to keep our cardiovascular system healthy.

At 54, with my knee pain, I can barely walk, and here these sharks are swimming even while sleeping! They keep their mouths open to let water pass through while resting. It sounds exhausting, but nature has built them to survive without a soft mattress.

Imagine never being able to sleep in a cozy bed because you have to keep swimming! Great whites basically do 'sleep-swimming' where their brain goes on auto-pilot. Honestly, some mornings at my desk, I feel like I am doing the exact same thing!

In all my years of reading nature books, I found it beautiful how God created different ways of resting. Great white sharks don't sleep like we do; they just go into a quiet, meditative state while drifting in the currents. Every living creature finds its own peace.
