Do gods sleep?

Thinking about how every living being needs sleep, even animals. It made me curious, do gods also need to sleep or rest, or are they beyond such needs?

In our Hindu tradition, we have the concept of Devshayani Ekadashi where Lord Vishnu goes into a deep meditative sleep for four months. Just as gods rest, our body also needs quiet rest. Drinking a cup of warm milk with turmeric before bed can help you sleep peacefully like the heavens.

In mythology, we hear so many beautiful stories about gods resting, like Vishnu sleeping on the Sheshnaag. If even the divine takes a break to restore energy, why do we run around so stressed? Let us all take a lesson and prioritize our own rest and sleep every night.

According to many scriptures, gods have states of yogic sleep or Yoga Nidra, which is a conscious form of deep rest. It shows how vital deep rest is for keeping the mind and body in perfect harmony.

Yes, they do! During the afternoon and night, we even close the doors of the temple deities so they can rest peacefully. 😴 It is a sweet reminder that resting is a beautiful and necessary part of life for everyone!

My grandmother used to tell me stories of deities resting, which always made me feel calm as a kid. Personally, whenever I struggle to fall asleep, I just focus on deep breathing and chanting a silent prayer. It really helps quiet my mind after a long day.

Scripturally speaking, concepts like Yoga Nidra describe divine sleep as a state of supreme consciousness. But looking at it practically, sleep is a biological necessity for us humans. If you are struggling with poor sleep, it is best to consult a medical expert rather than romanticizing sleeplessness.

In temples, they literally have sleeping schedules for the idols where they put them to bed and wake them up with morning prayers. It is a cool concept. For us humans though, skipping sleep is just calling for a bad headache the next day.

While divine mythology is comforting, please be cautious if you are asking this because you are experiencing sleeplessness. I ignored my chronic insomnia for a long time, thinking it was just stress, and it eventually led to severe health issues. Please see a doctor if you can't sleep.
