Do gas stoves cause asthma?

My younger son has recently been diagnosed with asthma, and we use a gas stove at home for all our cooking. Someone told me gas stoves can worsen asthma symptoms; is this true?

I read about this online and got so worried that I stopped cooking for a week! Apparently, the nitrogen dioxide from gas stoves can trigger breathing issues. If you are anxious about it, keeping the kitchen window open during cooking really helps ease the mind.

They don't directly create asthma out of nowhere, but the combustion byproducts like NO2 can definitely aggravate existing respiratory issues. My pulmonologist explicitly told me that indoor air pollution from poorly ventilated kitchens is a major trigger for asthma attacks. He recommended using an exhaust fan or moving to an induction cooktop if possible.

Bro, my hostel kitchen has zero ventilation and I used to get this weird cough whenever someone was frying stuff on the gas. I don't think it causes asthma directly, but the fumes surely make breathing thoda difficult if the room is closed. Better to keep the exhaust on.

My 8-year-old son has mild asthma and his wheezing used to get worse whenever I spent long hours cooking in the kitchen. We switched to an induction stove for most of our heavy cooking, and his nighttime coughing has reduced quite a bit. Please keep your kids away from the kitchen when the gas stove is on.

Yes, the emissions can trigger breathing issues. Installing a good chimney in the kitchen made a huge difference for my family.

In our Indian homes, we do a lot of heavy tadka and frying which releases a lot of smoke along with the gas emissions. It is always wise to keep the windows wide open or use a powerful exhaust fan. If someone already has sensitive lungs, switching to an electric induction cooktop is a very practical safety step.

My sister ignored her chronic cough thinking it was just kitchen smoke allergy, but it turned into severe asthma that required hospitalization. If you or anyone in your house is constantly coughing or wheezing near the stove, please see a chest specialist immediately instead of assuming it is normal.

I panicked so much when I first read articles saying gas stoves are toxic. Honestly, as long as your kitchen has decent cross-ventilation or a working chimney, it is perfectly fine. Don't stress too much about it, millions of us have grown up around gas stoves without getting asthma.
