Do elderly sleep a lot before death?

My grandfather has been sleeping almost constantly for the past few days, much more than usual. The family is getting quite worried. People are saying it might be a sign of him nearing the end. Is it common for the elderly to sleep excessively just before death?

I was reading some palliative care resources, and they mention that as the body slowly shuts down, the metabolism slows down drastically. This leads to extreme fatigue, so sleeping a lot is very common in the final stages. It seems to be a natural process of conserving energy.

My father's sugar levels would drop very low, making him sleep for long hours, which was very scary. So before jumping to extreme conclusions, please make sure to check their blood sugar and BP. Sometimes, it is just a metabolic dip that can be easily corrected.

Beta, in the old days, we believed that the soul slowly detaches, and the body takes long rests to find peace. During such times, just keep their room calm, play light spiritual music, and feed them a few drops of tulsi water. Keep them comfortable and let nature do its work.

This is such a heavy and scary thought, and my heart goes out to you if you are dealing with this. I always overthink these signs with my grandparents. Please talk to a doctor to understand their actual condition so you don't keep stressing yourself out.

If you are noticing sudden, extreme lethargy or if they are unresponsive, call their treating doctor immediately instead of guessing. It could be due to dehydration, infection, or medication side effects which might need urgent medical attention. Let a professional assess them.

Yes, increased sleep and slipping into a semi-conscious state is a very common sign as the end nears. The body simply does not have the strength to remain awake. Just sit by their side, hold their hand, and let them know they are loved and safe.

I don't have medical expertise in this, but when my grandfather was in his last days, his sleep increased a lot. The doctors told us it was due to natural weakness and organ function slowing down. It is a very sensitive time, so keeping a doctor in the loop is always best.
