Do dreads cause dandruff?

I've had dreadlocks for a while now, and lately, I've noticed more dandruff than usual. Is it common for dreads to cause dandruff, or could it be something else?

Dreads don't directly cause dandruff, but since washing your hair regularly becomes difficult, build-up can happen. Don't worry, just keep your scalp clean with a residue-free wash so you don't develop any itchiness.

My teenager wanted dreads but has a history of dry scalp. We realized that if you don't dry them completely after washing, the trapped moisture actually breeds fungal issues. You have to be very practical about the maintenance.

Applying a little diluted tea tree oil can help soothe the scalp if you have mild flakes. But if the itching is intense or you see red patches, skip the home tips and visit a dermatologist right away.

It is completely valid to feel worried about scalp hygiene before getting a major style change. Honestly, dreads require a very specific washing routine to prevent buildup. Once you learn the right drying technique, the anxiety goes away.

I barely have the energy to wash my normal hair twice a week, so maintaining dreads sounds like a nightmare. If you don't rinse them thoroughly, shampoo residue stays trapped and looks like instant dandruff. It's a lot of hard work.

I am thinking of getting locs but I am so scared of getting chronic dandruff. Has anyone else here faced a major dandruff flare-up after getting dreadlocks? I would love to know how you managed to keep your scalp clean.
