Do donkeys sleep standing up?

I saw this in a kids' book the other day, and now I'm curious. Do donkeys really sleep standing up? Or do they lie down like most other animals?

Yeah bro, they do stay standing for quick naps because of their leg locking mechanism. But they definitely lie down on their side when they need actual deep REM sleep. Saw this on a farm once.

I actually read somewhere that they can doze off while standing, but for deep sleep, they need to lie down. Is that true? I am not very sure but it sounds so fascinating if they can do both.

From what I have read casually, they can rest their muscles while standing to stay alert for predators. But for proper health and rest, they do lie down on the ground. I hope this helps you understand their behavior a bit better.

If you are managing livestock or planning a farm setup, studying their sleeping habits is good. However, if this is for some veterinary course or research, make sure you budget for good reference books rather than just relying on random online info.

If your own pet donkey is constantly standing and seems unable to lie down, please don't ignore it. It could be a sign of joint pain or injury. It is best to consult a local vet immediately to check if everything is alright.
