Do diabetics crave sugar after a meal?

I'm diabetic, and I've noticed that after I eat my regular meals, I often get a sudden, strong craving for something sweet. I thought diabetics are supposed to avoid sugar, so why do I feel this urge particularly after eating? Is this common?

They absolutely do. When insulin isn't working properly, the glucose from your food doesn't reach your cells, so your brain thinks you are still hungry for energy. Try drinking a glass of warm water or taking a short walk right after eating to curb that urge.

Post-meal cravings usually happen because of sudden insulin spikes and drops, especially if your meal was high in simple carbs. Try adding more protein and fiber to your plate to keep your blood sugar stable. Also, a quick 10-minute walk after meals does wonders for glucose absorption.

Actually, this happens with me after dinner every single day, yaar. Your body is basically not processing the lunch or dinner properly, so it signals for quick energy. I just chew some fennel seeds (saunf) to distract my mind.

Yes, but giving in means spending more on high-dose insulin or frequent HbA1c lab tests which are getting so expensive now. It is much cheaper to plan your meals with cheap, fiber-rich veggies like cabbage and cucumber to keep you full and avoid these cravings.

Don't feel bad about wanting sweets right after eating, it is just your body's way of asking for energy because of insulin resistance. Try keeping a small piece of apple or some roasted chana nearby. Take care, we can manage this slowly.
