Do cavities always hurt?

I sometimes see dark spots on my teeth, but I don't feel any pain or sensitivity. Does this mean they can't be cavities, or do cavities not always hurt initially? Do cavities always hurt?

Honestly, I have three cavities right now and the only thing hurting is my sleep schedule because of my baby. They don't hurt at all until they suddenly decide to destroy your life at 3 AM. Better get it checked before you end up awake like me.

I used to feel so much guilt thinking my teeth were fine because there was no pain, only to find out I needed multiple fillings. It actually made me feel like I failed at adulting. Please don't beat yourself up if you have silent cavities, it is very common.

Haha, if only they hurt immediately, we would actually go to the dentist on time! They are like silent tenants living rent-free in your mouth. They only start screaming when they've fully settled in, so don't wait for the pain.

No, they definitely don't always hurt. Mine was completely silent till the doctor pointed it out on the scan.

In my sixty years, I have seen that dental issues can be very sneaky. Many times my dentist found cavities during routine checkups that weren't bothering me at all. Trust an old man, catch them early before they start giving you real trouble.
