Do alligators sleep underwater?

Watching a video about alligators, I saw one completely submerged for a long time. It made me curious about their habits. Can alligators actually sleep underwater for extended periods, or do they always need to surface?

It is all about lung capacity and conserving energy. They can rest underwater for quite some time, but they have to come up for oxygen eventually because they cannot breathe submerged.

According to marine biology studies, alligators can hold their breath and rest underwater for several hours by lowering their heart rate. However, for actual sleep, they prefer land or keeping their snout above the surface.

I have spent years working near marshlands. They can submerge and go into a resting state, but they do not sleep fully submerged for days. If you are observing them, look for their nostrils just breaking the water line.

I used to get so stressed thinking they would drown if they stayed under too long. But then I read that their bodies are perfectly adapted to hold breath for hours while resting, so it is completely normal for them.

Nature has designed every creature with beautiful instincts to survive. They find peace and rest in the water, which is their natural sanctuary. God bless you.
