De-escalation techniques mental health?

My younger brother has been going through a tough time with his mental health, and sometimes he gets really agitated. My family and I are trying our best to support him. Are there any simple de-escalation techniques that we can learn to help calm things down at home when he's distressed?

When anxiety or anger spikes, the 5-4-3-2-1 grounding technique works wonders for me. You just name five things you can see, four you can touch, three you can hear, two you can smell, and one you can taste. It immediately pulls your brain out of the panic loop. Trust me, practicing this when you are calm makes it much easier to use during a crisis.

Haan na, sometimes the brain just goes into overload mode and everything feels too much. For me, washing my face with freezing cold water works like magic to reset the mind. It is a simple physical trick to break that intense spiral, try doing it next time you feel overwhelmed.

Listen, when everything feels like it is exploding inside, just take a step back from the situation. You don't have to resolve anything immediately, okay? Just tell yourself you can pause, walk away to a quiet room, and drink a glass of slow water. I'm right here cheering for you, you can get through this moment.

Actually yaar, when stress hits, trying to think logically is almost impossible. I just put on some noise-cancelling headphones and listen to brown noise or rain sounds for ten minutes. It really helps to cut out the outer chaos and gives my brain a much-needed break.

Haan, tension block ho jati hai head mein aur kuch samajh nahi aata na. Best strategy is to literally tell the other person, 'Let's talk about this later when we both are calm.' Taking a walk outside in fresh air works wonders to clear the heavy head, honest opinion.

The breath is your most powerful tool to calm the nervous system during high stress. Try practicing 'Anulom Vilom' or simply do deep abdominal breathing, making your exhalations twice as long as your inhalations. This activates the parasympathetic response, naturally lowering your heart rate and easing the mental tension.
