Can your thyroid grow back?

Years ago, I had my thyroid gland completely removed due to some issues. My son recently asked me about it, and it made me wonder. Is there any chance that the thyroid gland can actually grow back after a total removal surgery?

Well, I wish my hair grew back as easily as my doctor says thyroid tissue can sometimes regrow! Jokes aside, if some tissue was left behind during surgery, it can enlarge over time. Better get a scan done to see what is happening there.

Haan na, even I was shocked when I heard this can happen! Apparently, if they leave some cells behind during operation, they can grow again. It is better to get a thyroid profile test done to see if your medicine dose needs any change.

It can regrow slightly if a remnant was left after surgery. Along with my hypertension medication, I always get my thyroid levels tested every six months. Regular checkups are very important to make sure your hormone levels aren't fluctuating.

My surgeon at Apollo clarified that while a completely removed thyroid cannot grow back, any tiny remnants left behind can occasionally regenerate or swell. Ask your doctor clearly about whether you had a total or subtotal thyroidectomy.

I had half my thyroid removed back in 1995. Over the years, the remaining half grew slightly to compensate, and my doctor told me it's a very normal bodily response. Don't worry at all, just stay in touch with a good endocrinologist.

Yes, if you had a partial thyroidectomy, the remaining part can grow or expand to do the work of the whole gland. Don't worry or get scared. Just get a quick ultrasound done to see the exact size, okay? I am here if you need to talk.
