Can you wear compression socks to sleep?

My legs feel really tired and sometimes a bit swollen after long days at work, especially since I stand a lot. A colleague suggested compression socks for relief. I was thinking of wearing them overnight, but is it actually safe to sleep with them on?

Generally, you shouldn't wear tight compression socks to sleep unless your doctor specifically prescribed them for a condition. Since you are lying flat, your blood circulation doesn't have to fight gravity as much as when you are standing. Try doing light leg stretches or a short evening walk instead to improve circulation.

Honestly, wearing them to sleep is totally unnecessary and super uncomfortable. Compression socks are meant for when you are active, sitting for long flights, or standing all day. Unless a doctor told you to do it, just take them off and let your skin breathe at night.

Oh, wearing tight socks to bed sounds like way too much struggle, especially after a heavy dinner of biryani and kebabs! I prefer to be as loose and comfortable as possible when I sleep. Keep the compression socks for the daytime chores instead.

In our experience, keeping the feet free of tight clothing at night is best for good sleep. If you have leg pain or swelling, gently massaging your legs with warm mustard oil before sleeping is a wonderful traditional remedy. Avoid keeping tight socks on all night.

Look, unless a medical professional has specifically asked you to wear them overnight for a serious circulation issue, don't do it. Tight socks can cut off circulation when you are lying down for hours. Just sleep in regular, loose clothes.

As a general rule, standard compression stockings should be taken off before sleeping because your blood flow changes when you lie horizontal. If you absolutely need them at night for medical reasons, there are special nighttime garments designed with lower pressure. Check with your doctor to get the right recommendation.

Agreed with the general advice here. Taking them off at night is much safer for your skin and blood circulation unless your doctor says otherwise.

Please be very careful with this. I once wore tight socks to sleep to reduce swelling and ended up with severe skin irritation and restricted blood flow because they rolled down and got bunched up. If you have varicose veins or deep swelling, please consult a vascular specialist before wearing them overnight.

Sleeping in compression socks sounds like putting your legs in a sleeping bag inside a sleeping bag! Unless you want your feet to feel like they are in a tight hug all night, I'd say toss them off. Let those toes wiggle freely while you dream!

At this age, my joints already ache so much that adding tight socks to bed feels like self-punishment! I tried it once and woke up at 2 AM struggling to pull them off like my life depended on it. Do yourself a favor and keep your sleeping attire simple and loose.
