Can you swim with a kidney stent?

My husband recently had a kidney stone removed and now has a kidney stent. He loves to swim for exercise, and we were wondering if it's safe for him to go swimming with a kidney stent in place.

Usually, doctors advise against swimming while you have a kidney stent inside, especially if there is an external thread hanging out. The risk of getting a urinary tract infection from pool water is quite high, so it is better to wait until it is removed.

While a stent is in the body, it is best to avoid heavy physical exertions like swimming. Instead, you can practice very gentle walking or deep pranayama to keep your mind calm and body active without irritating your internal organs.

Please check with your urologist first because I went for a light swim with my stent and ended up with severe burning and a bad infection. The movement of swimming can sometimes irritate the bladder wall when a stent is in place, so be extremely careful.

Swimming pool water contains bacteria which can easily travel up the urinary tract when a stent is present. Just focus on simple home recovery, drink plenty of water to keep the urine clear, and skip the pool until the doctor gives a green signal.

I have a DJ stent placed last week and I feel a constant pinching sensation even when walking. Has anyone else felt this discomfort, and is it really safe to do any kind of water activities with it?

It is best to take a short break from swimming for now! Let the body heal completely with the stent first. Once your urologist removes it, you can dive back into the pool with full energy.
