Can you still drive with diabetic retinopathy?

My husband has diabetic retinopathy, and his vision has worsened a bit. He's worried about losing his driving license, but he still feels capable. Can you still drive with diabetic retinopathy, or are there strict restrictions once vision is affected?

Just like how I keep checking my thyroid levels to stay safe, eye conditions need very close monitoring. You must get your eyes evaluated regularly by a specialist before you decide to drive, especially at night.

As a long-term diabetic, I know how fast high blood sugar can blur vision. Keep your HbA1c under tight control and ask your doctor if your current eye condition allows safe driving.

I have been managing retinopathy for 5 years. Avoid night driving completely due to glare, use anti-reflective glasses if approved, and always keep your sugar levels stable before getting behind the wheel.

Getting a driver or using public transport is much cheaper and safer than dealing with accidents. Get a proper eye scan done first, it only costs around 1000-1500 rupees in most diagnostic labs.

Haan na, safety comes first always. Eye issues are so unpredictable, it is better to avoid driving until the doctor says it's perfectly fine.

I totally get it, losing independence like driving is very hard to accept. But please put your safety first and let an eye specialist decide after your next checkup.

Driving ability depends on the stage of your retinopathy and visual field test results. It's best to follow your ophthalmologist's precise recommendation as they can evaluate your sight scientifically.

It depends on your current vision levels. You must get a clearance certificate from your eye doctor first.

I agree with the others. Do not drive until your ophthalmologist gives you a clear green signal.

Doing gentle eye exercises and keeping a calm mind helps, but for driving, only trust your ophthalmologist's assessment of your vision range.

I had a scary moment on the road because of sudden blurry vision from retinopathy complications. Please do not drive until you see a retina specialist and get their direct approval.

I am new here and my uncle was just diagnosed with this. Is night driving really difficult for people with retinopathy, or is daytime driving also risky?

Keep your peace of mind and don't worry too much. Take proper rest, avoid risking yourself on busy roads, and let your eyes heal. Take care of your precious health.

I log all my health parameters on my app, and tracking eye checkup dates is super important for diabetics. If your doctor approves your visual acuity after tests, then you can drive, but safety comes first.
