Can you sneeze in your sleep?

My wife often says she hears me make a weird noise like I'm about to sneeze while I'm sleeping. But I never actually remember sneezing. Can a person sneeze in their sleep without waking up, or is it more of a partial reflex?

I am not very sure about this, but I read somewhere that our nerves rest when we sleep. Does that mean we have to fully wake up to sneeze, or can it happen subconsciously?

If you find yourself or a family member waking up frequently with sneezing and coughing, please get it checked. It could be due to dust allergies or even sleep issues that need proper medical attention.

My doctor told me that during REM sleep, our muscles experience temporary paralysis, which also shuts off the sneeze reflex. So if an irritant triggers your nose, your brain wakes you up first to sneeze, even if you don't remember waking up.

At Max Hospital, my doctor explained that the reflex arc is blocked during sleep, so we actually wake up briefly to sneeze. Ask your physician clearly if nighttime allergies are ruining your sleep quality.

In all my years, I have noticed that my family members only sneeze after they stir or open their eyes slightly. It is just the body's natural way of protecting us, so there is nothing to worry about.

I used to worry about this too! But actually, your body is super smart and wakes you up for a microsecond to sneeze so you don't choke. Just keep a box of tissues near your bed.

Personally, whenever I have a bad cold, I always wake up just before a sneeze happens. It's like my body forces me to wake up for that split second. That has been my consistent experience.

I used to ignore my midnight sneezing and heavy snoring, thinking it was normal. It turned out to be severe allergic rhinitis that disrupted my deep sleep. Please get a proper checkup done before it worsens.

If dust is causing you to wake up sneezing, just wash your bedsheets in hot water and keep the room well-ventilated. No need to worry about complex brain science, simple cleanliness solves most of this.

Listen, science says you can't sneeze while sleeping because the brain suspends that reflex. You will always wake up for a second to sneeze. Keep your bed clean and don't overthink this.

I ignored my nighttime sneezing and stuffy nose for months, which later turned into a severe sinus infection and breathing issues. Please don't ignore it and see an ENT specialist to get your allergies under control.

Don't waste time worrying about sneezing mechanics. If you're waking up tired or sneezing a lot at night, buy an air purifier for your room. It saves time and cures the allergy issue.
