Can you sleep with icy hot patch on?

I sometimes use Icy Hot patches for muscle pain in my back or shoulders. They really help, but I'm not sure if I can leave them on overnight while I sleep. Is it safe to sleep with an Icy Hot patch on for several hours, or should I remove it before bed?

I completely understand how frustrating back pain can be when you are trying to sleep. But leaving those chemical heating patches on for 8 hours can cause serious skin burns. It is much safer to apply a simple heating pad for 20 minutes before sleeping instead.

I literally did this last week for my neck stiffness and woke up with a nasty red chemical burn. The pack instructions clearly say not to sleep with them on. Just use a normal pain relief gel before bed, it is much safer.

Most overnight patches are not designed to be worn for more than 4 to 6 hours. Sleeping with them can cause rashes or mild burns due to the trapped heat. Better to use a pain relief spray or gel which absorbs quickly without leaving a patch on.

I totally get it, when you are in pain you just want instant relief so you can sleep. But please don't leave those strong patches on overnight because they can damage your skin barrier. Try some gentle stretching or a warm water bath instead.

Do not trust people who say leaving pain patches overnight is safe. Prolonged contact with active ingredients like menthol or methyl salicylate can burn the skin under pressure during sleep. Check with your doctor if the pain is severe enough to keep you awake.
