Can you see cavities without x rays?

I'm pregnant right now, so my dentist wants to avoid X-rays unless absolutely necessary for my safety. I have some tooth sensitivity, so I'm worried about potential cavities. Is it still possible for a dentist to find cavities effectively without taking X-rays?

Yes, dark spots or visible holes can be seen directly. While keeping active and walking daily keeps me healthy, I never skip my biannual dentist visit to check these things properly.

Actually, you can see some cavities if they are on the chewing surface as black or brown spots. But honestly, the ones hiding between your teeth are hard to spot without a proper checkup.

Yes, large cavities are easily visible to the naked eye when you look in the mirror. But for smaller, early-stage decay, a dentist's clinical exam is necessary so it doesn't grow bigger.

I also keep looking in the mirror with my phone flashlight worrying about spots. Yes, some are visible, but please don't stress yourself out too much trying to self-diagnose. Just get a quick dentist opinion to be safe.

I ignored a tiny black dot on my molar thinking it was nothing since there was no pain. Ended up needing a painful root canal later. Please go get it checked immediately even if it looks small.

Yes, my doctor showed me a cavity on my back tooth using a small dental mirror and camera. But for the tooth next to it, she had to do an x-ray because the gap was too tight to see.
