Can you receive disability for asthma?

My asthma has become very severe over the past year, and it's making it difficult for me to hold down a regular job. I heard about disability benefits. In India, can you receive disability for severe asthma if it significantly impacts your ability to work?

I am not completely sure about the exact legal rules, but I know that getting disability benefits for chronic conditions in India can be quite complicated. With my PCOS, I know how frustrating invisible illnesses are, but for asthma, it usually depends on how severely it impacts your lung function. It is best to check with a government hospital doctor who handles disability certificates.

Getting a disability certificate for asthma in India is highly unlikely unless it is a rare, occupational lung disease that has caused permanent, irreversible lung damage. You will need to show extensive spirometry test records and hospital admission papers to a government medical board. Even then, the percentage of disability allowed is usually very low, so keep your medical files extremely organized.

While daily steam inhalation and drinking herbal teas can help keep your airways clear, severe chronic asthma can be very limiting. If the condition is so bad that you cannot perform basic daily tasks, you must visit a government medical board. They are the only ones who can evaluate lung capacity and issue a proper medical certificate.

Hamare yahan toh asthma ke liye certificate milna bahut mushkil hota hai, bhaiya. Agar saans lene ki bahut zyada takleef hai aur kaam bilkul nahi ho pata, toh sarkaari hospital ke bade doctor se baat karni chahiye. Wohi sahi rasta dikha sakte hain, aap bilkul himmat mat harna.

Yes, it is possible only if there is severe, documented, permanent lung damage that does not respond to treatment. Please consult the medical superintendent at your nearest government district hospital for official guidelines.

According to the pulmonologist I consult, bronchial asthma is rarely classified as a disability under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act unless it causes permanent respiratory failure. The doctor explained that since asthma is usually manageable with regular inhaler therapy, it doesn't meet the criteria for a permanent physical impairment. You should get a pulmonary function test done to check your exact lung capacity.

It is so heartbreaking when people don't understand how exhausting asthma can be; they think it is just a simple cough. I have struggled emotionally for years because of how limited my life felt during bad flares. Even if getting official disability benefits is difficult, please don't let anyone minimize your daily struggle.

If you are looking at this from an employment perspective, don't rely on getting government disability benefits as the criteria are extremely strict for asthma. Instead, talk to your HR about remote working options or desk jobs with clean air conditioning. It is much more practical to adjust your work environment than going through the tedious government paperwork.

I was actually researching this online because my uncle suffers from severe breathing issues and can barely walk. From what I read, normal asthma doesn't qualify for disability, but if it leads to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or permanent damage, it might. It seems you need a proper evaluation from a government civil surgeon.

I totally get it, struggling to breathe makes even sitting at a desk feel like climbing a mountain. It is incredibly unfair that respiratory issues aren't easily recognized for support because they are invisible. Please take care of yourself, and I hope you find a sympathetic doctor who can guide you with the right papers.
