Can you puke in your sleep?

I sometimes get heartburn at night and worry about it. Is it actually possible to vomit or puke in your sleep without waking up, and is that dangerous? My grandmother always warned me about it.

Hey, don't stress too much, but yes, it is possible if you have severe acid reflux or had way too much alcohol. But honestly, if you or someone else is actually vomiting while completely asleep, it can be risky for breathing. Just check in with a doctor to be safe, bro.

Yes, it can happen, especially if a person is under the influence of heavy medication, alcohol, or has a severe medical condition. It's a serious choking hazard, so if someone is prone to this, sleeping on their side (recovery position) is safer. Definitely get a medical evaluation done.

It can happen if your digestion is severely messed up or during extreme acid reflux episodes. I've realized that keeping up with regular health checks, like thyroid and digestive enzymes, is so important to keep everything functioning well. Do consult a doctor for a proper diagnosis.

Man, as someone who barely gets 4 hours of sleep, this sounds like a absolute nightmare scenario. It usually only happens if you're completely passed out or heavily medicated, as the body normally wakes you up. If this actually happened, please skip the internet search and go see a doctor.

I panicked so much when my husband woke up choking from acid reflux once, thinking he would vomit in his sleep. The doctor reassured us that the body's natural gag reflex is very strong and usually wakes you up immediately. Just avoiding heavy dinners and sleeping on a raised pillow helped us immensely.

I completely understand how terrifying this thought is, as I used to lose sleep worrying about health mishaps like this. While our body's natural reflexes usually wake us up before vomiting, it can sometimes happen due to extreme reflux or deep sedation. Please speak to a doctor to put your mind at ease.
