Can you pee with kidney stones?

My father was recently diagnosed with kidney stones, and he's experiencing a lot of pain. He's finding it very difficult to urinate. Is it normal to have trouble peeing when you have kidney stones, or should we be more concerned?

Yes, you can usually pee, but it can be very painful or you might feel a frequent urge with very little output. If you find yourself completely unable to pass urine, that is a medical emergency indicating a complete blockage. Please visit a hospital emergency department immediately.

I literally just got over a 5mm stone last week. Yes, you can pee, but it burns like crazy and sometimes only a few drops come out. Drinking massive amounts of water helped me flush it, but the pain during urination was intense.

Yes, you can, but the flow might be interrupted or painful depending on where the stone is located. I tracked my daily water intake using an app to make sure I was drinking at least 3.5 liters. Staying hydrated is key to helping it pass.

You can pass urine, but if the stone is blocking the path, it can cause severe back pain and difficulty. Along with managing my BP, I make sure to avoid too much salt and spinach to prevent these stones. Keep getting regular ultrasounds done if you have a history.

In my experience, as long as the urine is flowing, you are safe. But if you feel like you want to pee and nothing is coming out, or if there is blood, don't wait at home. Go to your family doctor immediately.

I feel a constant pressure to pee but when I go, only a tiny bit comes out and it hurts. Is this normal with kidney stones? I am really scared that it might block completely. Has anyone else felt this exact same thing?

Yes, you can pee, though it might be uncomfortable. Doing gentle yoga like Pavanamuktasana and drinking warm water with lemon can help relax the body. But do not strain yourself if the pain is too severe; rest is equally important.
