Can you pass out in your sleep?

Often having very vivid dreams, sometimes I wake up feeling really strange, almost like I wasn't fully conscious for a moment. Is it possible for someone to actually "pass out" or faint while they are sleeping, without waking up first?

Hey, don't worry too much. Since we are already unconscious while sleeping, 'passing out' isn't really a term we use for sleep. But if you mean waking up feeling extremely dizzy or waking up from a fainting sensation, you should definitely discuss it with a family member and a doctor.

People on the internet will give you ten different theories about this, but please don't trust them. Waking up feeling faint or having breathing issues at night is a serious medical question. Go see a cardiologist or a general physician directly.

Keeping a light dinner and drinking some warm milk or chamomile tea before bed can help you sleep peacefully. However, if you are experiencing genuine blackouts or severe breathing pauses at night, home tips won't cut it. You must consult a doctor.

I went through a phase where I was scared to sleep because I felt like I was losing consciousness instead of falling asleep naturally. It was emotionally exhausting. Please know you are not alone in feeling this way, but do seek medical support to put your mind at ease.

Sometimes issues like sleep apnea or sudden drops in blood sugar/blood pressure can happen at night, making you feel like you blacked out. Having thyroid issues taught me to track these patterns. I highly suggest getting a proper sleep study or blood tests done.

I used to have terrible night anxiety where I woke up gasping and feeling like I was passing out in my sleep. It is a terrifying feeling, I totally get it. Talking to a doctor and managing my anxiety really helped me overcome this.

I had severe sleep apnea where my breathing would stop, feeling like a blackout in sleep. Getting a CPAP machine and reducing my weight changed everything. Go get a sleep study done at a hospital; it is the most practical step you can take.
