Can you pass cavities by kissing?

Recently started dating someone, and we were talking about dental hygiene. I heard a rumour that cavities can actually be transferred from person to person through kissing. Is this true, can you really pass cavities just by kissing someone?

I read online that the bacteria causing tooth decay can actually spread through saliva, and now I am so paranoid about this. Has anyone else started carrying mouthwash everywhere because of this fear?

I was looking this up and technically, the Streptococcus mutans bacteria can transfer through saliva. But that doesn't mean you instantly get a cavity, as it depends on your own oral hygiene and genetics too. Pretty interesting to think about!

In all my sixty years, I have never seen anyone get a cavity just from kissing. Good brushing habits and avoiding sweet foods late at night are what keep your teeth healthy. Don't worry about these modern overthinking trends.

Honestly, as long as both people brush twice a day and visit the dentist regularly, you don't need to stress. Cavities happen mainly due to poor hygiene and sugary foods sticking to your teeth, not just from sharing a kiss.

Yes, bacteria can transfer, but good daily brushing easily prevents any real cavities from forming.
