Can you live without a thyroid gland?

My sister was diagnosed with an overactive thyroid, and the doctor mentioned that in some cases, removal might be necessary. This has made me quite anxious for her. I'm trying to understand if it's possible to live a healthy life even after having your thyroid gland removed completely.

Welcome to the group. Yes, you can live a very full and normal life without a thyroid gland. You will just need to take a daily thyroid hormone pill, usually called levothyroxine, on an empty stomach every morning to keep your body's systems running smoothly.

Yes, you can absolutely live without it. It might sound scary at first, but with a small daily tablet, life goes on completely normally. Please take care and don't stress.

Listen, there is absolutely no need to panic. Thousands of people have their thyroid gland removed and lead perfectly active lives. Just make sure you get your blood tests done every six months so your doctor can adjust your medication dosage correctly.

I had my complete thyroidectomy in 2018. The biggest tip I can give you is to never skip your morning pill and wait at least 45 minutes before having your tea or coffee. Once you get used to this routine, you won't even feel like you are missing an organ.

I can only speak from my wife's experience after her surgery last year. She takes her thyroid supplement daily and goes for her regular health checkups. So far, her energy levels are great, and she hasn't faced any major issues in her day-to-day life.
