Can you live with partial liver?

A close relative of mine needs a partial liver transplant, and a family member is considering donating. We are all very anxious about the surgery's outcome for both of them. I want to know if the recipient can truly live a healthy life with a partial liver, and what it means for the donor too.

I donated a portion of my liver to my daughter nearly fifteen years ago. Today, she is married with her own kids and I am living a healthy retired life. The liver is a marvelous organ that grows back quickly, so please do not worry.

Yes, but you have to be very careful with your diet during the recovery phase. Focus on easily digestible vegetarian food, like khichdi, boiled vegetables, and avoid any heavy ghee or fried items. Keeping your meals small and frequent helps the liver regenerate without getting overloaded.

It is reassuring to hear that the liver grows back, but I still get super anxious about the surgery and the recovery time. Did anyone else experience heavy bloating or digestive issues in the first few weeks after the partial resection? I would love to know how you managed it.

Over the years, I have seen many donors and patients in this forum recover beautifully from partial liver surgery. The liver usually regenerates to almost its original size within 6 to 8 weeks. Just follow your hospital's post-op instructions and give your body plenty of rest.

Yes, absolutely. The liver is the only organ that can regenerate itself completely from just a fraction of its size.

I just had a partial liver resection four months ago, and my latest ultrasound shows my liver has already regenerated almost completely. The first month was tough with some weakness, but now I feel totally back to normal. Just stay hydrated and take it easy.

It is completely possible because of liver regeneration. Just make sure to eat clean, home-cooked food, avoid alcohol completely, and do not take any over-the-counter herbal supplements as they can put unnecessary load on your recovering liver.
