Can you join national guard with asthma?

I've always wanted to serve the country, maybe join the National Guard. I have mild asthma that is well-controlled with medication. Will this be an issue? Can you join the National Guard if you have asthma?

Actually yaar, it is very tough. They have very strict physical rules, and if you have active asthma with inhaler use, they might reject you during the medical. But if it was just mild childhood asthma, you might get a waiver.

I agree, military forces are very strict about breathing issues. It is best to check their official medical eligibility PDF once.

Please don't hide your breathing issues to pass the physicals. I once ignored my wheezing during a fitness test and collapsed, which was highly embarrassing and dangerous. Get a proper lung function test done first.

Back in my day, any history of chronic breathing trouble was an automatic disqualification for active combat roles. However, rules change and sometimes they accept mild cases with medical clearance. Go through the proper channel and don't lose heart.

While you prepare for all these official checks, make sure you are eating clean and avoiding mucus-forming foods that trigger your breathing. It won't cure asthma but keeping a healthy diet helps your lung capacity during training.
