Can you have type 2 diabetes and not be overweight?

My uncle, who is quite fit and not overweight, was recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. This surprised me as I always thought it was mainly linked to being overweight. Is it possible to have type 2 diabetes and not be overweight?

Yes, it is possible. Don't assume you are safe just because you look thin. Instead of waiting, get a basic HbA1c test done from a budget-friendly lab; it usually costs around 300 to 400 rupees and gives a clear three-month average.

I completely understand how confusing and scary this can be. We always hear that diabetes only happens to overweight people, but that is not true at all. Take a deep breath and consult a doctor to get your doubts cleared.

Oh absolutely! Diabetes doesn't look at your waist size before deciding to visit. Lean diabetes is a real thing, so don't let anyone tell you that you are too thin to have high blood sugar.

Yes, my brother-in-law is quite lean but has type 2 diabetes. Along with his medicines, he takes warm water with a bit of methi seeds powder in the morning which helps keep digestion good, though regular checkups are a must.

Yes, you can have it. Please don't ignore symptoms like frequent urination or dry mouth just because your body weight is normal. Get a proper blood test done and consult a physician for safety.

Definitely. You can look absolutely fit on the outside but still have insulin resistance on the inside. Focus on building muscle mass through resistance training and eating a high-protein, low-carb diet to manage insulin sensitivity better.

I panicked like crazy when my sugar came back high because I've always been thin and active. But my doctor reassured me that lean diabetes is manageable with basic lifestyle tweaks. Don't worry, you can easily handle this.

Yes, it is called lean diabetes. I track my daily macros and step count on my fitness app, and many lean individuals in my fitness community also manage high glucose levels. It is mostly down to genetics and visceral fat.
