Can you have psoriatic arthritis without psoriasis?

I have been experiencing a lot of joint pain and stiffness, especially in my fingers and toes. My father has psoriasis, but I don't have any skin patches myself. Can someone still get psoriatic arthritis even without having psoriasis?

Yes, you can absolutely have psoriatic arthritis without ever showing any skin plaques. In my case, the joint pain in my fingers and lower back started almost four years before any mild scaling appeared behind my ears. My tip is to check your family history for psoriasis, as that is a big clue for doctors.

My rheumatologist explained that about 15% of patients develop joint inflammation before any visible skin symptoms of psoriasis appear. This is called 'psoriatic arthritis sine psoriasis'. It makes diagnosis tricky, which is why a thorough clinical examination of nails and scalp is crucial.

Please do not ignore unexplained joint pain even if your skin is completely clear. I delayed seeing a rheumatologist because I thought it was just normal stiffness, and now I have permanent joint damage in two of my fingers. Get a professional opinion before the inflammation causes lasting harm.

Wait, I didn't even know this was possible! My dad has severe joint stiffness but his skin is totally fine, so we never thought it could be related to psoriasis. This is actually wild. I should probably tell him to ask his doctor about this next time they go for a checkup.

My grandmother used to say that some illnesses hide deep inside before showing on the outside. My nephew had severe heel and knee pain, and only after visiting a specialist we found out it was psoriatic arthritis, even though his skin is perfectly normal. Please trust a specialist's diagnosis over what we see outwardly.
