Can you have graves disease without a thyroid?

I had my thyroid gland removed a few years ago because of hyperthyroidism, but lately, I've been feeling very anxious and my heart rate has been high, almost like before. My doctor mentioned Graves' disease before my surgery. Can you still experience symptoms of Graves' disease even after having your thyroid gland removed?

Yes, you actually can. Graves' is an autoimmune condition, meaning the antibodies are still in your blood even if your thyroid gland has been surgically removed or destroyed. It can still affect your eyes or skin, so keeping in touch with your endocrinologist is very important.

Yes, because Graves' is an immune system disorder, not just a thyroid gland issue. The antibodies can remain in your system post-thyroidectomy. Make sure to schedule regular blood tests to monitor your hormone levels and antibody count as advised by your specialist.

Look, simple thing—removing the thyroid gland doesn't mean the disease in your immune system is gone. Those Graves' antibodies can still be active in your body. Don't skip your doctor visits thinking everything is sorted now.

Please do not search for random home remedies or alternative cures online for something as complex as Graves' disease. Even without a thyroid, the autoimmune response can persist. Get a proper consultation with a registered endocrinologist and follow their treatment plan.

I am so confused because my mother is supposed to undergo a thyroidectomy soon due to Graves'. Does this mean she will still have to take medications for Graves' even after the gland is completely removed?

Ah, the wonders of the human body! Even after getting rid of the thyroid, the underlying Graves' antibodies can still hang around like uninvited guests. Just keep your specialist in the loop and let them manage the dosage of your thyroid hormone replacement.
