Can you have croup without a fever?

My little one has developed that harsh, barking cough that sounds like croup, but she doesn't have a fever at all. Usually, with kids, fever comes first with any sickness. Is it possible for a child to have croup symptoms without running a temperature?

Yes, absolutely. Croup is basically swelling in the airway, and it can start with just a barking cough and no fever at all. If the child is struggling to breathe, don't ask online, just take them to a pediatrician immediately.

I panicked so much when my toddler started barking like a seal in the middle of the night without any fever. The doctor gave a single dose of steroid and he was totally fine. It is very common, so try to stay calm.

Yes, you can have croup without fever. Because kids' immune systems react differently, a lack of temperature doesn't mean it's not croup. Keep a close watch on their breathing and consult a doctor to be safe.

Yes, croup can present without a fever. Keeping the baby in a humid environment, like a steamy bathroom, can gently help open the airways naturally. However, please consult a pediatrician if the cough sounds very harsh.

I was just reading about this for my nephew. Apparently, viral croup often has a fever, but 'spasmodic' croup can hit suddenly at night with zero fever. It's really interesting how that works.
