Can you have asthma in the military?

My biggest dream is to join the army, but I was diagnosed with mild asthma when I was a child. Will having asthma prevent me from joining the military?

It is incredibly heartbreaking when you have a dream of serving but your body doesn't support you. Generally, active asthma is a disqualifying factor for military service because of the intense physical demands. I know how disappointing this can feel, but please don't lose heart, there are other ways to serve.

Based on most military recruitment standards, having active asthma after a certain age is usually a direct disqualification. They check your lung capacity thoroughly during the physical medical exams. You might need to submit a spirometry report if you want to apply for a medical waiver.

I can only share my own experience – my cousin wanted to join the army but was rejected during the medical round because he had a history of using inhalers for asthma. The physical training is very tough and they don't take risks with lung issues.

You can try daily pranayama and yoga to strengthen your lungs, which is great for overall health. However, for military standards, you must get evaluated by an official military doctor. If you have severe breathing issues, do not try to hide it as the training can be dangerous.

My son wanted to join the defense forces, but we had to find out the hard way that active asthma is not allowed due to safety reasons in high-altitude postings. It is hard for a child to hear, but their life and safety are much more important. Please consult a recruitment specialist for exact rules.

I am looking to apply for a non-combat role in the defense services, but I have mild asthma. Does anyone know if the medical rules for asthma are the same for administrative or desk jobs in the military?

Man, military training requires crazy stamina, and with asthma, it's usually a no-go in the medical rounds. I'd rather stay home, enjoy my warm ginger tea and hot samosas, than risk an attack during a 10km run in the dust!
