Can you have an asthma attack in your sleep?

My son has asthma, and sometimes he wakes up in the middle of the night coughing badly and struggling to breathe. Can an asthma attack happen while someone is deep in their sleep?

Nocturnal asthma can be extremely dangerous if your airway constricts while sleeping. Please ensure your inhaler is always on your bedside table and consult your doctor immediately to adjust your controller medication.

It definitely happens, especially during cold winter nights. A simple workable solution is to keep your bedroom warm, wash your bedsheets in hot water to remove dust, and never sleep directly under an AC vent.

Yes, sleep-related asthma is very common because of body temperature drops and dust mites in the mattress. Keep your bedding clean, vacuum regularly, and make sure you use your preventive inhaler as prescribed before sleeping.

I have been waking up with a tight chest and a dry cough around 3 AM recently. Does anyone else get this too? I don't know if it's just the cold weather or if my asthma is worsening.

Look, waking up gasping for air is a serious matter. Don't sit and wait for it to get worse or try home remedies. Go straight to your pulmonologist and get your lungs checked.

Waking up fighting for breath is definitely one way to skip your morning alarm! But jokes aside, keep that blue inhaler right next to your pillow so you don't have to play hide-and-seek with it in the dark.

Bro, my roommate has this and it's super scary when he wakes up coughing in the middle of the night. He always keeps his inhaler handy and some warm water nearby, which seems to help him calm down.

My son used to have severe coughing fits only at night when he was younger. Our doctor explained it was nocturnal asthma, and changing his pillows and dusting his room daily helped reduce the attacks significantly.

My pulmonologist told me that cortisol levels naturally drop at night, which can trigger bronchoconstriction and lead to sleep-time asthma attacks. He modified my steroid inhaler timing to manage this, so you should consult your doctor for a personalized plan.
