Can you have a stroke in your sleep?

I sometimes wake up with a strange numbness in my arm that takes a while to go away. My doctor advised me to be careful about stroke risk factors. I am worried, can a stroke actually occur while someone is in their sleep?

Yes, unfortunately, it can happen during sleep. I always say we should enjoy our favorite foods but also balance it out with low salt and oil so our arteries stay healthy while we sleep. Always get regular checkups done.

Yes, sleep apnea and high blood pressure at night can significantly increase the risk of having a stroke while sleeping. As a patient of hypertension, I make sure to take my BP medicines regularly before sleeping and get my levels checked by my doctor.

Oh great, now I have one more reason to stay awake at night worrying! But jokes aside, yes, 'wakeup strokes' are a real thing where a person goes to bed fine and wakes up with stroke symptoms. Please get a proper doctor's advice on this.

Yes, it is called a wake-up stroke. People usually only realize it in the morning when they try to get out of bed and find one side of their body isn't working properly. It's super scary, so any such symptom needs an immediate emergency visit.

My doctor explained that about 20% of ischemic strokes occur during sleep, often linked to undiagnosed obstructive sleep apnea. Because the exact onset time is unknown, it can complicate certain clot-busting treatments, so immediate hospitalization upon waking is critical.

Yes, wake-up strokes are well-documented in medical science. If you or a family member wake up with sudden facial drooping, arm weakness, or difficulty speaking, do not wait or assume it is just sleep stiffness. Go to the nearest emergency room immediately.
