Can you have a high fever with a cold?

My toddler has a bad cold right now, and his fever seems quite high. Usually with a cold, I expect a mild fever. Can a child really get a high fever just from a common cold?

I totally get it, dealing with a high fever when you already have a blocked nose and cold is so exhausting and miserable. Yes, it can happen, especially if it's a flu or a secondary infection. Please take plenty of rest and stay hydrated.

Yes, you definitely can, and it makes you feel like you've been run over by a truck! Usually, a simple cold doesn't cause a very high fever, so it might actually be the flu. Get some rest and don't try to be a hero, just take your medicines.

In my seventy years, I have seen many seasons change and caught many bad colds with high fevers. It is quite common when your body is fighting off a strong virus. Just take paracetamol if the fever goes high and drink plenty of warm fluids.

I know how scary it is when your body temperature suddenly spikes and you start worrying if it's something severe. It is actually quite common to have a high fever with a strong viral cold. Try to stay calm, sponge with damp cloth, and consult a doctor if it doesn't come down.
