Can you get sick from sleep deprivation?

Ever since I started working night shifts, my sleep has been very disturbed, and I often feel very run down. I'm concerned about my overall health. Can prolonged sleep deprivation actually cause physical sickness?

I am experiencing this for the first time due to college stress and I feel so dizzy today. Is it okay to take a small nap in the afternoon, or will that make it harder to sleep at night?
