Can you get short term disability for diabetes?

I've recently been struggling with managing my diabetes, and sometimes it affects my ability to work consistently. I'm considering taking a short break from work to focus on my health. Can diabetes qualify someone for short-term disability benefits?

Usually, standard diabetes doesn't get you short-term disability in India unless you have severe complications like diabetic neuropathy or kidney issues. I asked my HR last year when my uncle was struggling, and that's what they told me.

It can be so emotionally draining to manage severe glucose swings while working a stressful job. I totally understand how much you need a break, but please check your company policy carefully as standard diabetes is rarely covered.

Getting disability approval is a long, costly process with lots of medical certificates. Better to use your regular company sick leaves or planned casual leaves for your doctor visits to keep things budget-friendly.

If managing daily cravings counted as a struggle, we'd all get disability leave! Jokes aside, standard diabetes won't qualify, but if there's a major hospitalization involved, you can definitely apply for sick leave.

No, standard diabetes is generally not classified as a short-term disability under most Indian corporate insurance plans.

At our corporate hospital, we only issue medical certificates for short-term leave if the patient has acute complications like diabetic ketoacidosis. You should consult your specialist to understand what your policy requires.

Instead of worrying about disability leave, focus on managing your levels through regular active walks and diet. If your doctor permits, a 30-minute evening walk can bring down your insulin resistance significantly.
