Can you get rid of kidney stones on your own?

I've been having excruciating pain in my side, and the doctor thinks it might be kidney stones. I'm trying to avoid any major procedures if possible. Can smaller kidney stones pass out of the body naturally, or do you always need medical intervention?

I was just reading about this online because my roommate is in pain. It seems if the stone is very small, like under 5mm, it can often pass on its own with lots of water. But larger ones definitely need medical intervention.

Bro, I literally drank 4 liters of water daily and coconut water every morning to flush out a 4mm stone last year. It was super painful when it came out, but it worked. If your stone is big though, don't try this, just see a doctor.

The pain of a kidney stone is absolutely draining and can make you feel so helpless and scared. Please don't suffer alone trying to pass it at home if the pain is too severe. Do consult a urologist to make things easier for yourself.

My son had a small kidney stone last term during his exams. The doctor advised us to give him plenty of fluids and kept him on pain management until it passed. Keep a close eye on the fever or vomiting; if those happen, rush to the hospital.

I panicked like crazy and thought I needed emergency surgery when I first felt that sharp side pain. But after an ultrasound, the doctor reassured me it was a tiny stone and would pass with just medication and water, which it did in a week.

Totally agree with drinking lots of barley water, it really helped me flush my small stone safely.

My lower back has been hurting on one side and I am worried it might be a stone. How do you actually know if the stone is too big to pass on its own? Do I need to get an X-ray or scan done first?
