Can you get fired for mental health?

My colleague took a few weeks off last month citing mental health issues, and now I'm hearing whispers about his job security. It made me wonder. Can a company legally fire someone if they have mental health concerns or need time off for it?

In India, the Mental Healthcare Act of 2017 protects individuals from discrimination. If you are struggling, it is best to get a formal diagnosis and recommendation from a licensed psychiatrist to share with your HR for accommodation.

When my thyroid levels were severely off, my anxiety and mood swings were so bad I couldn't focus on work. Getting regular blood tests and adjusting my medication helped me recover. Make sure you check your physical health parameters too.

Bro, I went through severe depression last year and felt like quitting. I talked to my manager honestly and they actually gave me a few weeks off. Legally they can't just fire you for being unwell, so don't hesitate to speak up.

Extreme stress and depression can really mess up your physical health, even spiking blood sugars. Take care of your health first. If you need leave for medical treatment, get a proper doctor's certificate so the company cannot raise issues.

I totally understand how stressful this is. I had panic attacks last year and was terrified of losing my job. But most companies have wellness programs now, so try checking with your HR about counseling options they provide.

In my previous company, a colleague took a two-month sabbatical for clinical depression. He submitted proper doctor certificates and rejoined once he felt better. The company was supportive when things were documented.

Under corporate policies, medical leave applies to mental illness as well. Get a prescription and clinical advice from a certified professional. Having documented medical proof protects your employment from unfair termination.
