Can you eat sherbet with kidney disease?

My doctor has me on a strict diet because of my kidney disease, and I really miss having desserts. Is sherbet a safe option for someone with my condition, or should I avoid it completely?

I totally get it, in hot summers we all crave a cool glass of sweet sherbet. But with kidney issues, you have to be so careful with both sugar levels and fluid limits. It is really tough to restrict yourself, but protecting your kidneys is the priority.

My son has renal issues, and we have to monitor his daily fluid intake very strictly. Many sherbets contain high amounts of sugar and certain preservatives or potassium-rich fruit concentrates which are not good. We usually stick to plain water or a small cup of homemade light lemon juice only when his doctor allows.

Please be very careful. I once ignored fluid and sugar restrictions by drinking processed fruit sherbets, and my kidney parameters worsened drastically within a week. You should definitely check with your nephrologist before drinking these sweet drinks.

I have mild kidney issues and I am always terrified of drinking anything other than water. Does anyone else get super anxious even thinking about having a glass of rose sherbet or nimbu paani? I really miss having refreshing drinks.

It is generally safer to avoid sweet sherbets because of the high sugar and potential potassium content. Your doctor can guide you best based on your kidney reports.

While regular heavy sherbets are a big risk for kidneys due to sugar load, maybe you can try a very diluted, unsweetened mint and lemon water? It satisfies that craving for a cold, flavorful drink without overloading your system with chemicals or heavy sugar.

My husband's doctor explained that standard commercial sherbets are loaded with high-fructose corn syrup and potassium additives which put extra pressure on compromised kidneys. He recommended avoiding them entirely and focusing on staying within the recommended daily water limit.
