Can you donate organs if you have cancer?

My father recently passed away, and we were discussing organ donation, but he had cancer a few years ago. I was wondering, can you donate organs if you have cancer in your medical history, or does that mean they can't be used?

I know how heavy it feels when you want to do something noble like this but feel limited by your health. It is heartbreaking, but sadly, active cancer usually rules you out for organ donation because of the risk of transmitting cancer cells. It's okay to feel upset about this, but your intentions are what truly matter.

When my uncle wanted to register as a donor, the doctors explained that because of his past cancer treatments, they couldn't accept most of his organs. Only his corneas were considered under very specific conditions. I don't know the exact rules, but that was just our family's experience.

Actually, cancer cells can travel through the blood, so organ donation is usually a big no, yaar. The doctors can't take any chances with the recipient's life since they are already so weak. You can still donate eyes sometimes, but you should definitely ask a professional about the exact guidelines.

There is a lot of misinformation online about who can and cannot donate. With a history of cancer, the rules are very strict and depend entirely on the type of cancer and how long you have been in remission. Do not trust random forum posts; ask an oncologist or a transplant coordinator directly.

Practically speaking, having active cancer is a contraindication for solid organ donation because immunosuppressed recipients could easily contract the disease. However, tissue donation like corneas is sometimes allowed depending on the specific cancer type. It is always evaluated case-by-case at the time of passing.

At this point, my own organs are barely keeping me going, let alone donating them! But seriously, with a history of cancer, most transplant programs politely say no to avoid passing on any issues. Though I've heard some exceptions exist for corneas if you've been cancer-free for a long time.
