Can you donate blood if you have rheumatoid arthritis?

I've been wanting to donate blood regularly, but I have rheumatoid arthritis. It's usually well-managed with medication. Will this prevent me? Can you donate blood if you have rheumatoid arthritis?

Generally, if you have rheumatoid arthritis, it depends on the medications you are taking. Many strong immunosuppressants will disqualify you from donating. The simplest solution is to call your local blood bank or ask your regular doctor before going there.

According to standard blood donor selection criteria, having rheumatoid arthritis itself may not always disqualify you, but taking disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs) or steroids definitely will. My doctor confirmed that you must be off certain medications for a specific period before you can donate safely.

With chronic conditions like diabetes or rheumatoid arthritis, our bodies are already dealing with internal inflammation. Donating blood while on active medication for RA is generally not allowed. Please consult your rheumatologist before making any decisions.

Most blood donation screening apps will ask you for a list of active medications. Since RA involves chronic inflammation and often immunosuppressive therapy, blood banks usually defer donors to protect both parties. Check the eligibility checklist on the Red Cross or government donor portals.

Haan na, autoimmune diseases are so tricky to manage. Even if we feel fine, the medications we take are quite strong, ho na. Better to not take any risk with blood donation and ask your specialist first.
