Can you crack a rib from vomiting?

I recently had a very bad bout of food poisoning, and I was vomiting intensely for hours. It was so forceful that my chest hurt a lot afterwards. I was wondering if it's actually possible to crack a rib due to very severe vomiting. Is that a real concern?

Yes, believe it or not, the pressure can actually crack a rib if the vomiting is very violent. When my nephew had severe food poisoning, we gave him ginger water to soothe his stomach, but the chest pain got so bad we had to take him to the clinic.

My teenage daughter actually had a minor rib fracture from a terrible bout of vomiting during a stomach flu. The doctor said the sudden spasm of the muscles can do that. Keep a close eye on any sharp chest pain when they breathe.

Yes, violent coughing or vomiting can exert enough force to cause a rib fracture, especially if bone density is low. Since chest pain can also indicate other serious issues, it's best to consult a doctor and get an X-ray done.

Honestly, this happened to me after a bad night of food poisoning. I felt a sharp pop in my side and it hurt to breathe for weeks. The doctor confirmed it was a hairline fracture just from the dry heaving.

Man, that sounds incredibly painful! Yes, it can happen from the intense pressure, but don't stress too much. Just rest up, avoid lifting heavy things, and definitely get a doctor to check it out if the pain doesn't go away.
