Can you be fired for missing work due to diabetes?

I have had diabetes for many years, and sometimes my sugar levels fluctuate, causing me to miss work. My manager has been understanding so far, but I worry. Can you be fired for missing work due to diabetes?

Just like how I manage my high BP with daily medicine and regular doctor checkups, diabetes also needs proper routine. If you are missing work too often, try talking to your doctor to adjust your insulin timings so it doesn't affect your office hours. Most companies are fine if you show them you are actively managing your health.

Haha, if they fired everyone who had high sugar in India, half the offices would be completely empty! Don't stress too much, just keep your doctor's prescriptions ready. As long as you don't blame your sugar crash for eating your colleague's lunch, you should be completely fine.

Totally agree with others here. Just submit your medical certificates to HR and they legally cannot terminate you for a genuine health condition.

I also get super anxious whenever I have to take sick leave for my sugar checkups, thinking my boss is getting annoyed with me. Has anyone else faced weird comments from colleagues when you take frequent short breaks to eat or take your medicine? It feels really uncomfortable.

Let's be practical: companies care about output. If your diabetes is causing frequent leaves, sit down with your manager and discuss a work-from-home setup or flexible hours. Presenting a solution along with your medical reports is the best way to secure your job.

If your health is affecting your job, maybe try adding a 15-minute brisk walk after meals, as it really helps stabilize blood sugar spikes during work hours. Talk to your doctor about a proper diet and exercise plan. Staying active might help you reduce those sudden fatigue days and avoid taking too many leaves.
