Can you be an athlete with diabetes?

I play cricket at a fairly high level, but I was recently diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. I'm worried this means I can't pursue my sports career. Can you actually be an athlete and manage diabetes at the same time?

I get so anxious even thinking about exercising with high sugar levels! But I read that many international athletes actually have type 1 diabetes and manage it beautifully. You just have to be extra careful, monitor constantly, and always keep quick sugar sources nearby.

My endocrinologist explained that exercise increases insulin sensitivity, which is great, but can also cause sudden hypoglycemia during heavy workouts. He advised always checking blood glucose before, during, and after training, and keeping glucagon or fast-acting carbs handy. Proper medical supervision is key.

Absolutely you can, there is literally nothing stopping you. Many pro athletes have diabetes; it just requires discipline with your insulin, diet, and monitoring. Get a good sports endocrinologist on board and you are good to go.

With a busy work schedule and workouts, managing diabetes can be tough but highly doable. You just need to plan your meals and blood sugar checks around your training sessions. A continuous glucose monitor (CGM) can save you a lot of time and hassle here.

Of course you can! If anything, you now have a medical excuse to carry jelly beans and juice boxes everywhere you go. Jokes apart, with the right planning and regular monitoring, you can easily rule the field.

Just like managing my thyroid, keeping diabetes in check while staying active requires regular blood tests and doctor follow-ups. You can definitely be an athlete, but make sure your dosage is adjusted according to your heavy training routine by a proper specialist.
