Can uti cause a stroke?

My elderly mother, who is prone to UTIs, recently had a severe one that made her very confused. We heard something about severe infections leading to serious complications. Can a urinary tract infection actually cause a stroke, especially in older people?

This sounds very serious. If you or someone you know is showing signs of a stroke like slurred speech or numbness, please rush to the nearest emergency room immediately. A severe untreated UTI can sometimes lead to sepsis, which is a medical emergency.

Wait, is this actually a thing? I get UTIs so often and now I'm terrified reading this. Has anyone else ever heard of a connection between the two or is it just for extreme cases in older people?

Honestly, I haven't slept in 24 hours because of my toddler, but this question made me wake up. A UTI causing a stroke sounds like a wild Google rabbit hole. Unless it's a massive untreated infection causing systemic chaos, it's highly unlikely, but go see a doctor to be safe.

In older adults, a severe UTI can cause sudden confusion or delirium, which looks very much like a stroke. I saw this happen with my uncle. Don't panic, but get a urine test and see a doctor immediately to clear the infection before it worsens.

No, a simple UTI does not directly cause a stroke. However, in elderly people, severe infections can cause symptoms that mimic a stroke, so urgent doctor consultation is necessary.

I manage high blood pressure, which is a direct risk factor for stroke, so I keep my health in check. A UTI itself doesn't cause a stroke, but a severe infection can strain your cardiovascular system. Keep your BP monitored and treat infections promptly with your doctor.

According to my physician, systemic inflammation from a severe, untreated infection like urosepsis can theoretically increase the short-term risk of cardiovascular events. However, a standard UTI does not cause a stroke. Always get antibiotic courses prescribed properly by a doctor.
