Can ultrasound detect kidney failure?

My brother has a history of kidney problems, and we are regularly monitoring his kidney function. The doctor often recommends an ultrasound. Can an ultrasound actually detect if someone is heading towards kidney failure?

Honestly do not wait around to figure this out on your own. I delayed my blood tests last year thinking it was just weakness and regretted it when things got worse. An ultrasound can show if kidneys are damaged or shrunken, but please get a proper creatinine blood test done too.

The ultrasound machine is like a camera, it can show if your kidneys look like tired old raisins or normal healthy beans. But it can't tell the whole story on its own, so you will definitely have to face the dreaded blood test needle to know the actual function!

An ultrasound is a good starting step because it shows the size and shape of the kidneys. Please don't worry too much right now, just book an appointment with a nephrologist and they will guide you step by step.

A scan will help the doctor see if there is any blockage or structural issue in the kidneys. While you get these tests done, please don't start any extreme high-protein diets or random herbal juices thinking they will detox you. Keep your food simple, low salt, and let the doc tell you what to do next.

I completely understand the stress and sleepless nights you must be going through thinking about this. When we had to get this done for my father, the anxiety was terrible. The ultrasound was helpful to see the kidney structure, but the doctor also checked his GFR levels to be absolutely sure.

Actually, my uncle went through this recently. The ultrasound showed that his kidneys were smaller in size, which pointed towards chronic issue, but the doc confirmed the failure only after checking his blood reports. Get both done, don't rely only on the scan.
